ABOUT ITALIAN Italian is a language spoken by about 63 million people as a first language, primarily in Italy. In Switzerland, Italian is one of four official languages. These Rosetta Stone programs are about 4 times more expensive than other more effective options and offer no added value for the extra money. Too much focus on vocabulary, shallow grammar, and not much help with the main objective of language learning, i.e. practical use of it. It seems to be full of gimmickry, e.g. speech recognition, multimedia, in place of substance.

The price seems to be aimed at people who assume that quality is proportional to price. This is woefully not the case.

Take it from a linguist of 5 fluent languages: buy a competent bilingual dictionary and a good grammar/exercise book/Audio CD combination. It will cost you a quarter of the price and teach you much more.

I am finding this course to be great fun, although some may find it repetetive. New phrases/words have to be learnt by trial and error and they are repeated often. You may even find you haven't learnt that much until you near the end of the course. However, as you near the end you will begin to realise just how much you know. I am half way through the 2nd course and am starting to find my feet.

One danger of the course is that you may get slightly the wrong end of the stick when guessing what something means, but hopefully you'll have a eureka moment later when it pops up in a different context. I often can't help looking up what something means, but you aren't actually encouraged to do that.

For those who may be interested there is a demo on the Rosetta stone website which allows you to try a variety of the lessons before shelling out your hard earned. Also, their website allows you to "buy" access to the courses online for much less than it costs to buy the CDs.

Very effective way of learning; so simple even an idiot could learn, or apparently not in some case's! It may seem very expensive but be assured it is worth the money, i would recomend it as more of an aid to start learning french rather than advancing your french.

Can't learn, so boring I had to stop over 1 hour, tired of listening to the same 10 words over and over.

Having struggled to learn French at school and failed at evening classes; what a revelation to find out about Rosetta Stone. Rosetta's language CD Roms with are complete with images and pictures and no translation make language learning fun, interactive and easy. For the first time in my life - language learning made sense; I was able to learn in my own time and at my own pace and it was straightforward - something I never thought I would say about language learning - I can't wait to reach the next level!
